Mackinaw Valley Karate and Fitness

Nestled in the Mackinaw business district, there lies a small building with enormous heart. If you drop in at 107 Fast Avenue, in Mackinaw, you’ll likely find Keyth Mooneyham practicing his craft - Shotokan Karate. Keyth, 43, practiced the art as a child, Keyth decided to return to it in 2007 when his children became school aged. In 2011, Keyth earned his blackbelt and, around the same time, took over the program from his former sensei. He described that transition as “flawless”, owing to the fact that he had spent years training in the building.

Shotokan karate is a martial art that was officially established in 1928 and is a descendant of several martial art disciplines, including Taekwondo. Shotokan is known for its vigorous punching and high kicks. Talking to me about the sport, Keyth noted that professional MMA fighter Lyoto Machida, is also a participant. Machida, a 43 year old Brazilian who fights out of L.A., is considered one of the best karate fighters still active within the MMA world. His fights are worth looking up, if MMA is something you enjoy.

Keyth also spoke about the lifestyle change that Shotokan brings. While being a viable form of self-defense, Shotokan also teaches self-discipline and self-respect. “It takes some dedication”, Keyth told me, noting that “this isn’t your typical community soccer.” Currently, Keyth is looking for more teens to join his classes, as he hopes to further the art of Shotokan in the area. However, there is room in all of his available classes.

Mackinaw Valley Karate and Fitness also offers circuit training at differing times, 5 days a week. These classes are body weight or dumbbell based, and are open to anyone.

If you’re looking to get in shape and learn a valuable form of self defense, you don’t have to go far. Mackinaw Valley Karate and Fitness has you covered. You can reach out to Keyth Mooneyham at (309) 642-4073.
